Season Pass Questions

What is an Adult Double?

An Adult Double is designed for your friend or significant other to enjoy being on the water with you. You must sign up together at one of our locations to take advantage of this.

How many guests can I bring free as a Gold Member?

You are allowed to bring one guest per visit per adult. For example, if you purchase an Adult Gold Double you may bring two friends. If you purchase a Family Gold, you may bring a maximum of 2 friends regardless of the number of children in the Season Pass.

How many people does a Family Season Pass include?

Family Season Passes include parents and children 15 and under. There is not a specific limit as families come in every shape and size. If your children are 16 and older you can purchase our inexpensive youth season pass!

I have a Gold Season Pass, can I take a kayak on vacation?

To take one of our single or double kayaks with you, we need 48 hours notice and a 50% credit card hold on the value of the boat. But don't worry, you aren't charged a penny when you bring the boat back safe and sound. The kayak(s) available may not be at the closest location to you.

Yes, you can take a kayak or two on one trip a season for up to five consecutive days. You are responsible to pick up the kayak(s) and transport them.

Can I reserve a boat ahead of time?

Only our Gold Pass members can reserve a boat, and that's just one of the reasons to consider joining. To find out the other reasons, check out our Season Passes

What are the ages of the Youth/Senior Season Passes?

The Youth Season Passes are for 16 - 21 years of age. The Senior Season Passes are 65+

If I have a youth season pass can I bring a friend?

If you have a youth season pass you can bring a friend if they are 16+ and have a signed waiver from a parent or guardian. There are no exceptions to this rule!

General Questions About Stuff

Do I have to wear a lifejacket?

Absolutely! Wearing a life jacket when you use our equipment is one of the things we won't budge on. But we'll give you one that fits perfectly, and our team will help you however they can; putting it on, checking the zippers and buckles until you're snug as a bug.

Will I tip over in a Kayak or Canoe?

Possibly, but you know what? It's actually quite normal. They are very stable boats when you're sitting in them, but when you stand up you won't be surprised to find that capsizing is very likely!

But don't worry. You will be wearing a lifejacket, and if you really want to make sure capsizing is no problem, try our KAYAKING INTRO LESSONS

Can we get out of a boat and explore?

If you are in a kayak, canoe or pedal boat – absolutely! In fact we encourage you to explore the islands of Hopkinton State Park and the shores and trails of College Pond or Spot Pond.

But if you're in a sailboat, there is no landing for you. You see, it might damage the hull and we want to make sure the boats are in good condition for the next person to enjoy.

Oh and you can't jump out or go swimming from any of the boats, at any location. It’s not because we don't want you to have fun, but there are all sorts of things like active reservoirs and it's just not safe enough.

Can I rent one of the Sailboats?

Ahhh well the sailboats are only rented to our Silver and Gold Pass members (one more reason to sign up!). We go through a checkout that takes about 45 mins and makes sure:

  • you have a general understanding of how to rig a boat
  • you can properly (and safely) push off from the dock
  • you can sail a square, beat upwind, reach, come about, gybe, and sail down wind
  • you can properly (and safely) dock the boat
  • you can tie a clean knot
  • you can explain the points of sail to us

You can skip the checkout altogether if:

  • you have a US Sailing Certification in Light Wind or Higher (and you can show us)
  • you have a Community Boating Helmsman rating (and you can show us)

Can I bring my dog with me on the boat?

Of course! We even have dog life jackets to make sure your best friend is as safe as you are. Unfortunately they are the only pet jackets we have, so it's dogs only.

Do I have to reserve a boat? Can I reserve a boat?

You do not have to reserve a boat. We have plenty on hand that even if they are all out the wait is not long. If you want to reserve a boat we have some great privliages as a Gold Member that will allow you to do so. You can check them out here.

How old do I have to be to rent a boat?

We want everyone to love boating as much as we do so we only ask that:

  • If you are under 15, your parent or guardian signs the waiver form and you have an adult present on the water.
  • If you're an adult with a group under 15, every child must have a waiver form signed by their parents/guardians And a supervising adult is on the water with the group all the time.
  • If you're 16 or 17, you have a waiver form signed by your parent/guardian but then you can go onto the water on your own.
  • If you're over 18, well you just have to sign the waiver form and we'll have plenty of those at each site.

What happens if I have to cancel my lesson or rental or camp?

Questions About Camps

Are the Camps inspected and licensed?

In one word... Yes! In some more words.... Outdoor Recreation camps must comply with regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (105 CMR 430.000) and are licensed and inspected by the local Board of Health.

Are the Instructors qualified?

You can rest assured knowing that all of our camp counselors are qualified with at least CPR and First Aid certification, and most are Red Cross lifeguard certified as well. Their training from the American Canoe Association and US Sailing is always up to date and we make sure we have at least 1 lifeguard or instructor assigned to every 7 campers.

What are the Achievement Awards?

We love to recognise the kids for a job well done (and they love it too) and so we offer Achievement Awards at the end of every camp. These are based on the skills the kids learn during the camp and are completely voluntary to do, but the kids get a buzz when they can show off their accomplishments. (These Awards also help us work out the skill levels before kids sign up to the more advanced camps.)

Sailing Achievement Awards:

  • Deck Hand
  • Skipper
  • Helmsman

Paddling Achievement Awards:

  • Paddling
  • Advanced Paddling
  • Paddler Rescue

Do I have to book multiple weeks consecutively?

Not at all! You can book your week through the whole summer as well as mixing and matching the camps.

Just one example is:

  • Week 1 – Boating is Fun
  • Week 2 – Discover Paddling (or Start Sailing)
  • Week 3 – Discover Paddling (or Start Sailing) again because it was so much fun!

Can we enroll in different camps on the same day?

You sure can! We have designed the camps to be mixed and matched so you could enroll in just one camp for each day (or half day), or choose something more challenging and to do a different camp between morning and afternoon!

What if we've enrolled for a camp and it rains?

We run the camps rain or shine so you don't need to worry about some weather going and spoiling the fun. If it does get a bit crazy, we've got loads of inside landlubber games and activities that will tucker them out just as much.

Does my child have to be a great swimmer to enjoy the Boating is Fun camp?

  • Hopkinton and Stoneham:
We ask parents to certify that campers are able to swim 50 yards and tread water for 1 minute, this statement is included in our waiver. We recommend campers are Red Cross Swim Level 4 or equivalent.
  • UMass Boston:
We ask parents for PROOF that their campers can swim 50 yards and tread water for 1 minute. We accept the following:
    • Red Cross Swim Level 4
    • YMCA Guppy level
    • Boy Scout Swimming Merit Badge or Lifesaving Merit Badge
    • Or a letter from a certified Red Cross / YMCA lifeguard stating they can swim 50 yards and tread water for 1 minute.
    • However if the child cannot swim to that level yet and is enrolled in swimming lessons or has passed a lesser level we will still allow them in camp, however we will put them in a more stable boat with a lifeguard supervising them.

Are campers allowed to swim?

You can’t have all that water around and not allow swimming BUT swimming is only allowed in certain areas and only when there is a lifeguard there to supervise. Even if they don’t swim they’re going get plenty wet with games, capsizing skills and the general splashing that always happens. So there’s no worries about that!

What should we pack for camp?

During the day the kids are going to be tearing around outside (and sometimes inside) so to make sure they are fully equipped for their pirate adventure, campers should arrive with:

  • Water
  • Swimsuit and towel
  • Hat
  • Waterproof Sunscreen 15+ already applied
  • Sunscreen in their bag so they can put some more on later
  • Sunglasses
  • Closed toe water shoes or sneakers (no flip flops!)
  • Raingear (if it looks like it might rain)
  • Lunch in an insulated bag (and snacks and drinks can be bought from the boathouse)
  • And a sense of adventure!!!

What paperwork do I need for the Camp?

Before camp starts it’s important we get some documents from you. Mail or fax them to us.

  • Camp Waiver
  • Physical and Immunizations (a copy of school form is fine)
  • Parent Handbook
  • Pickup/Dropoff instructions
